Microsoft has secured exclusive streaming rights for Grand Theft Auto VI on Xbox Cloud Gaming at the game's November launch, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma told employees during an all-hands meeting, according to sources familiar with the deal cited by The Verge.

The exclusivity means only Xbox Cloud Gaming can stream GTA 6 to players when the game releases. The duration of the exclusivity agreement remains unclear. Rockstar Games has not announced a PC version of GTA 6, making this deal significant for PC players who want to play without purchasing an Xbox Series X/S or PlayStation 5 console.

The timing aligns with Microsoft's November overhaul of Xbox Cloud Gaming access. Starting that month, Microsoft will shift from Game Pass subscription-only access to a pay-as-you-go model. Game Pass Ultimate subscribers will receive 15 hours of streaming monthly, Premium subscribers 10 hours, and Essential subscribers 5 hours. Players without Game Pass can purchase hour bundles separately, allowing phone-only gamers and those without Xbox hardware to stream GTA 6 directly.

Sharma framed the GTA 6 deal as something "no other platform holder is doing," according to The Verge's sources. Microsoft's ability to offer streaming access to a major title unavailable on other platforms provides a marketing opportunity for Xbox Cloud Gaming as it introduces the pay-as-you-go tier.

During the same meeting, Sharma described Project Helix, Microsoft's next-generation Xbox hardware, as a "family of devices" rather than a single console. Microsoft plans to partner with other companies on some Helix devices. This follows AMD and Microsoft's 2024 strategic partnership announcement to develop a broader hardware portfolio beyond traditional Xbox consoles.

The GTA 6 exclusivity also reflects Microsoft's cloud gaming strategy shift. Rather than tying Cloud Gaming solely to Game Pass subscriptions, the company is positioning it as an independent service with flexible payment options. GTA 6 becomes the anchor title for converting players to pay-as-you-go streaming, particularly targeting the installed base of PC gamers awaiting an official GTA 6 port that may not arrive at launch.
