An MIT Technology Review Insights poll found that fewer than one in five organizations (16%) are getting transformative value from their AI deployments. The poll, as described in the source, found that 40% of respondents see moderate gains in specific tasks or teams, 21% report meaningful gains, and 23% report minimal or no returns.

The poll also found that 38% of respondents are still piloting AI use cases, and 35% use AI to assist employees with tools such as co-pilots or chat assistants. Only 12% have AI agents in production, and 3% say AI does most of the work in key processes.

Prukalpa Sankar, co-founder of Atlan, says the gap comes from context, meaning how well AI understands a business. She describes a context layer as infrastructure that sits between an organization's business systems and its AI platforms. It turns enterprise information into governed, machine-usable context for AI agents or models. "Without a context layer for AI, it's almost like you're hiring the smartest intern in the world, blindfolding them, and throwing them into your organization," Sankar says.
