Sony reported net profits of 449.60 billion yen (about $2.84 billion) for the three months ended September, a 44 percent increase from 311.4 billion yen ($1.96 billion) in the same period last year. The results are from the company's September earnings, as reported by The Verge.

Sony attributes much of the gain to its PlayStation business and to Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The film released in July and earned $2.52 billion at the global box office, according to the report. Sony Pictures Entertainment posted earnings of $581 million for the quarter, a 527 percent jump from $93 million in the same period of 2025.

PlayStation 5 console sales fell. The report says Sony sold 2.6 million units in the second quarter, compared with 4 million in the second quarter of 2025. PlayStation game sales rose for both digital downloads and physical discs, the report says, despite a week-long player blackout in August. Players staged that blackout to protest Sony's plan to stop selling discs entirely.

The report says Sony's exclusive Marvel's Wolverine sold 2.4 million units against a reported budget of $300 million. On the next-generation console, Sony CFO Lin Tao said developers are making "solid progress" and that the project is "progressing as scheduled."
